Since ancient times, the pearl has been a symbol of unblemished perfection. A pearl is considered one of oldest known gems, and for centuries possibly the most valuble. To the ancients, pearls symbolized the moon and held magical powers. Pearls were considered such a treasure that only certain people possessing a certain rank in Rome were allowed to wear pearl jewelry. It has also been noted by some historians, one of the reasons Julius Caesar invaded Britain in 55 B.C. was to obtain freshwater pearls. One of the most fascinating displays in the Louvre in Paris is a fragment of the oldest known pearl jewelry, found in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess who died in 520 BC.
What makes pearls so special? In Latin the word for pearl literally means "unique", attesting to the fact that no two pearls are identical. Pearls have a classic presence and look of accomplishment to them. This look translated into a feeling once you put them on. Which is why it is said a good strand of pearls never goes out of style.
